Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical Postcards

Project Brief: Create a set of three postcards based on a famous play or musical. Imagery on the cards was requested to be created from abstract photography of cut paper. The design of the cards should be representative of the themes in the play. Each card in the series should be different from one another but still contain elements to create a cohesive whole.

Solution: The musical I chose, Hair, is a rock musical that is centered around the hippie counterculture and sexual revolution of the 1960's. It deals with themes of race, sexual freedom, pacifism, religion, and more. With the photography of the abstracted paper, I wanted it to have a distinct sense of motion. The images all start in a single burst of light then the strands of paper branch out, showing the change and divide in thinking the hippies had from the "mainstream" society. I wanted the cards to be very vibrant and have a distinct sense of motion, flow, and color.
